USA BMX National Schedule released for 2012

October 31, 2011 – Gilbert, Arizona For the first time in the long history of BMX in the United States, there will be one national schedule. In June of 2011, the American Bicycle Association acquired the assets of the National Bicycle League and formed USA BMX. With the formation of USA BMX comes the advent of one national schedule, one sanctioning body, and in the end … one national champion. The USA BMX schedule kicks off in January in Reno, Nevada and will conclude over Thanksgiving weekend with the Grand Nationals in Tulsa, Oklahoma. With 27 stops in between the season opener and the Grand National, including the Olympic Games in London; 2012 promises to be an exciting year for the action-packed sport of BMX racing. One of the highlights of the 2012 USA BMX schedule is the United States Olympic Trials; which will be held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California over Father’s Day weekend (June 15-17). This stop will feature the US Open Nationals in conjunction with Olympic qualifying for the Team USA. Eight of the country’s fastest elite racers will be vying for one of 3 spots on Team USA, with the winner earning instant qualification to compete in London for the 2012 Olympic Games. March 30-April 1 will also be an amazing weekend in Chula Vista with the combination of the USA Cycling BMX National Championships, UCI BMX Supercross and the USA BMX So Cal Nationals. New for 2012 are the Eastern and Western Divisional finals which will take place in Louisville and in Reno simultaneously on Labor Day weekend. Under the new USA BMX structure these events will be 3 day national weekends with national event days Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Rockford, Illinois, will once again play host to the Midwest Nationals. Last year the event was awarded the Best Single Amateur Sports Event by Sports Travel Magazine and this year will celebrate its 25th year. In addition to many of the familiar stops on the National Schedule, USA BMX will also be visiting several new locations. With a balanced schedule from coast-to-coast, riders and fans alike will be sure to have a stop (or two) near them.

It is with great pleasure that I present to you the attached 2012 USA BMX National Schedule. This information is being sent to you first and will not be published on the web or via press release until Monday. Our pledge to you is to keep you as informed as possible and ensure that you receive breaking news before anyone else.

The creation of the 2012 schedule has been incredibly complex due to both the timeline and the combination of the NBL and the ABA national series. Several locations on the ABA series had already been approved and contracted prior to the dissolution of the NBL. We are confident the series we have constructed will allow the membership of USA BMX to actively participate in the National Series, and we have worked diligently to make sure that three national weekends (6 national scores) are accessible. However, we also understand that there are parts of the country where more races are needed and we will do our best to address that in the coming years. In fact, we will now immediately shift to working on the 2013 national schedule.

As we all know the sport is evolving at a rapid pace and the development of future USA BMX programs are no exception. From the creation of the USA BMX program we indicated that the national series would have some events that were run under the traditional ABA transfer system and others under the traditional NBL total points system. Since the conclusion of the webinar conducted in September our office has been bombarded with feedback regarding running a series with two different operational structures. Much to our surprise there has been an overwhelming amount of feed back in favor of choosing one structure and that being the transfer system for nationals. Ironically most of this feedback came from former NBL track operators who were very concerned about confusing riders with multiple systems and preferred the simplicity of one. As will be the case with USA BMX now and moving forward, you spoke and we are listening, thus the 2012 USA National BMX Series will be hosted utilizing the transfer system.

The new schedule does contain some exciting components to take note of. March 30-April 1 will be a huge weekend at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA. This year the UCI Supercross event will be paired with the So Cal Nationals for amateurs on Friday and Sunday and Saturday will be the USA Cycling National Championships for the amateurs on the Chula Vista BMX track. The UCI SX will take place on Friday and Saturday on a brand new replica of the London Olympic track. Then on Sunday we will host the USA Cycling National Championships for the pros on the SX track as well. Three amazing events wrapped into one weekend. Additionally, as 2012 is an Olympic year, the BMX Olympic trials will be paired with the US Open Nationals June 15-17. New for 2012 are the Eastern and Western Divisional finals which will take place in Louisville and in Reno simultaneously on Labor Day weekend. Under the new USA BMX structure these events will be 3 day national weekends with national event days Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

I hope you are as excited as the team here at USA BMX about the future of our sport and possibilities for our tracks and riders. With unity in our hearts and the London Olympics in our sights, 2012 will truly be a special year.
